Frontside, Backside / Outside, Inside (November 2013)
Black and white photographs
Artist statement reads: This mini photo series explores the important relationship between skateboarders and the environment in which they skate. Skateboarding is an expressive sport that highly depends on its surroundings: maneuvers and tricks that skateboarders attempt are direct responses to specific locations and physical obstacles they encounter. In each photograph, the background has been removed (by using customized stencils and the dodging technique in the darkroom) as well as the skateboards, taking the figures entirely out of context. Completely isolating the skateboarders from their setting and leaving them in a large area of negative space totally disregards the significance of their surroundings. This lack of information visually communicates that the physical environment is an essential part of skateboarding.
